Did you know that the Academic Computing & Media Services (ACMS) website receives over 600,000 views each month? That makes the ACMS website one of the department’s most important sources of information to the UC San Diego campus. Elaine Fleming, a member of the Marketing & Communications team, oversees the ACMS website as the Web & Graphic Designer.
One of Elaine’s primary duties is to make sure that the website is intuitive, informative, and easy to navigate. Though Elaine is in the early stages of revising the ACMS website, there have already been noticeable improvements. Most notably, Elaine has worked on the ACMS home page to promote the latest news from the department. “On the homepage we’ve made a couple of little tweaks, adding the [ACMS] Blog,” Elaine said, “We’re going to keep pushing the news [out to campus] because it’s updated regularly and it [features] important things that people need to know and interesting things about the department and our projects.”
Elaine is also systematically tackling individual sections of the website to improve the visitor experience. She is currently working on the Campus Software Distribution section. “That’s a great example of several pages buried in the website that are frequently used,” Elaine said, “I know from being on campus elsewhere that it’s something everybody gets frustrated with.” Elaine is reviewing these webpages to make sure that faculty, students, and staff can get to the information that they want without having to hunt for the right webpage. “We’ve done some shuffling and reorganization and a little bit of redesign and that’s in progress,” Elaine said, “I’d like to eventually work through every section and then look at the site as a whole.”
In addition to keeping the website up-to-date, Elaine also provides graphic design services to the entire department. With plenty of design projects crossing her desk, Elaine gets to exercise her artistic talents daily. She also oversees ACMS’s branding. “Branding,” Elaine explained, “is giving an entity, in this case ACMS as a whole, a personality and a look and a feel so that when somebody sees something that is ACMS, they can identify it immediately through either color, logo, or content.” One example is making sure the ACMS logo is used properly and consistently across ACMS’s many units.
Prior to joining ACMS, Elaine worked at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies and the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation where she performed similar duties. Elaine was drawn to working at UC San Diego because of the opportunity to use her artistic talents to serve the cause of higher education. Elaine’s talents aren’t just in the arts. She has been known to ride a half century on a bicycle—covering 50 miles in 6 hours or less!
As you visit the ACMS website in the coming months, we hope that you will be able to find what you are looking for quickly and easily. If so, it’s more than likely the result of Elaine’s hard work. Glad to have you aboard Elaine!
